You made it here, so congratulations on taking the first step to being able to take care of your family in an emergency situation.
In most places, emergency kits are recommended to have enough supplies to last at least 72 hours, or three days. This is because that's how long it's being estimated to take relief workers to reach some areas after a disaster. If you really want to be able to survive without help and without waiting in line for supplies you should be better prepared. For the beginner - we've come up with a plan to help your family survive on their own for 3 weeks.
In an emergency, there may not be power, or clean water - you may not be able to get gas, go to the store or stop at the bank. Being prepared means having your own food, water, cash, and other supplies.
You're on a mission--let's build an emergency kit!
To assemble your kit store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. A basic emergency supply kit should include the following recommended items:
one gallon per person per day (for a family of four that's 84 gallons!).
you should have at least 2,000 calories per day per person (for a family of four that's 168,000 calories of food). Try stocking up on this emergency food supply with a 25 year shelf life.
